The Site: A branch of a multinational bank located in the UK servicing domestic and business account holders from the location
Customer Industry: Commercial Buildings

The building is serviced by a ducted ventilation system bringing fresh air into the building. Bad smells had been reported by the site staff and a potential issue within the ductwork identified. Ventilation systems can be a breeding ground for pathogens, moulds and fungi which (if unchecked) can pose a significant hazard to health. Ventilation systems have multiple compliance standards that if implemented reduce the risk of occupants breathing contaminated air:

  • BESA TR19
  • BSEN 1578
  • CIBSE TM26
  • HTM03-01 (Hospital s and healthcare only)

All recommended compliance standards start with a regular documented inspection of the ventilation system with following levels of dust deposit testing (DTT) or surface swab sampling to further identify and contaminants if visually dirty. Should elements of the ducting be identified as contaminated then localised cleaning can be implemented to improve air quality. Compliance with these standards ensures that any failures are quickly identified and can be rectified.

Our engineers carried out a site inspection to sample the duct and ascertain the root cause of the bad smells. It was quickly identified that birds had managed to find a way in to the system contaminated the ductwork. As faeces can be a serious health hazard the team scheduled an urgent deep clean for the next day.

The ductwork was manually cleaned by hand and using brush machines to remove the dry deposits. As there was a high level of microbial contamination the entire system was fully sanitised following the manual cleaning. Following the clean the ductwork was sampled using DTT and Swab samples to verify the efficacy of the process and provide hygiene certification.

Following this service the client has actioned annual inspections of all ductwork within their estate:

1. Annual Check
2. DTT and Swab Samples if required
3. Testing of indoor air quality

By actioning a regular inspection program the client is in full compliance of clean air standards and will quickly pick up any hazards within their duct systems before they poise a significant risk to health.
